Janet’s Story
My mother’s story
My mother’s story is one of hope and restoration.
She has Parkinson’s, but was still able to live at home until Christmas 2017. Unfortunately, her health took a downturn and she ended up at a larger assisted living community in Dayton.
I felt like after all we had been through, she was finally going to be safe and cared for. The building looked great and the sales and management team assured me they would give her great care. I could never have believed the care would be so lacking. Underwhelming would be an understatement. Whether it was staffing shortages or not having enough staff to start with, Mom was never turned like she was supposed to be, developed severe wounds, and lost significant weight.
This wasn’t supposed to happen.
She was rushed to the hospital and we were very concerned she would pass away. The team was able to stabilize her and she started a rehab stint at a skilled nursing facility. As her health stabilized, we were still struck by how difficult it was to get help when we needed it. I feel for the aides at places like this. It’s really difficult to imagine taking care of 15 people and do a good job.
We needed to find a long-term option that would actually take care of mom. Our family has deep faith and we hoped and prayed we would find the right place.
When we first met with Drew and Robert at Family Tree, it seemed like a God-send. Here we were, in a real house, and being told the ratio of residents to caregivers was 5:1. Mom would actually get turned on time, get her medications on time, and have a shot at healing. Honestly, as excited as I was, I was skeptical they could even handle Mom. After all, she had struggled at other facilities that had full-time nurses.
All I can say is, wow!
I am so glad we decided to move Mom to Family Tree. The attention she receives is better than I could have dreamed, and far better than any place we had experienced. Family Tree has absolutely been an answer to our prayers.
